10 Books That Will Make You Love Reading Again
When I was a kid, I LOVED reading! Magic Treehouse, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, I loved it all! Then middle school, high school, and college happened and my reading (for pleasure) stopped. We could have a whole separate post on how I think schools don’t do a great job of encouraging healthy reading habits, but that’s a post for another day. Today, I’m going to tell you about the books that made me a reader again. I hope there is something here for everyone.
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez
This is one of my favorite romance books of all-time! If you love a cute rom-com with just a dash of spice, this is the perfect one with great characters you can root for, a more mature love story without the dreaded miscommunication, and humor that will have you smiling as you turn the page.
The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain
If you’re looking for a tear-jerker, look no further. This one is a rollercoaster ride as you follow the story of a mother who will do anything to save her child. I love a story that explores the bond of a parent and child and this is one that stayed with me for a long time. Diane Chamberlain’s writing also draws you in immediately and never lets you go, so you can’t go wrong with any of her books.
The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine
I love a good juicy drama and I haven’t yet read a thriller that has topped this one’s drama. If you love a good twist, following messy and toxic relationships, and flipping the page on the edge your seat, this one is for you. Just get ready to think you know where it’s going and be totally wrong.
Room by Emma Donoghue
This one is heavy. You may have heard of the movie, but if you haven’t read the book, it’s incredible. The harrowing story of a woman who is abducted and ends up having a child in her captivity that she will do anything to protect. It’s all told from the 5-year-old’s perspective, making it even more powerful. I finished it in two days, it’s that good.
City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert
Oh, this book… I love it so much. I actually listened to the audiobook for this one, which was a fantastic way to go. You’re following a young woman as she tries to make her own way in New York City in the 1940s and wow, what a beautiful coming-of-age story. I laughed, cried, smiled, and didn’t want it to end. The characters will last with you for a long time.
The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
It was so hard for me to choose which Kristin Hannah book to recommend. You truly can’t go wrong. I’ve read 4 books by her so far and they are all in my favorites of all time. But this one might be my absolute favorite of them all. A story of a family that moves to Alaska for a fresh start and the darkness lurking within their family that threatens to destroy them. Incredibly emotional, but you won’t be able to put it down. Kristin Hannah’s writing is unparalleled.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix
Grady Hendrix has such a unique brand of horror. I can’t watch horror movies, but I do love me a good horror book and he balances humor, satire, horror, and characters so masterfully. This book is so much more than just an exorcism story. The bond between the two best friends in this book is one that resonated so profoundly with me. I found it so relatable that I became so invested in their story and how it would end. And the ending doesn’t disappoint, by the way! If you’re up for a little bit of horror, this one is my amazing. Oh and did I mention it’s all in the 80s?
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
This is such a charming read perfect for the fall time for all those cozy witchy vibes. The story of a witch who is hiding her real identity and gets hired to educate a three young witches. It’s got romance, a touch of magic, heartwarming kids, and all the perfect emotional beats. I was hooked immediately and loved it from start to finish.
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
Liane Moriarty is AMAZING. Please go read all her books, but if you somehow missed the Big Little Lies TV show, start with this one! It’s my favorite and the most delicious read. So toxic, so much mommy drama, and you just won’t be able to look away.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
Last, but certainly not least, a book that took me by complete surprise. I remember reading this one on my honeymoon and on my flight home. It was so good that I couldn’t put it down even when we were standing in line at immigration. If you haven’t seen the movie, please do yourself a favor and experience this story. A young outcast girl, a romance gone wrong, a murder mystery, and a court drama all in one.
I hope there is a little something here for everyone! Let me know if you end up checking any of these out! What is your favorite book or the one that got you back into reading?
